IELTS Academic Module:

IELTS Academic Reading Test Format:

Total time: 60 Minutes Total No. of Questions = 40 Main Goal: To test a wide range of reading skills Including reading for gist, main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, whether the candidate understands logical argument and recognising writers’ opinions, attitudes and purpose. IELTS Academic exam includes: 3 Long texts – Descriptive, Factual, Discursive, Analytical These 3 texts are selected to test the non-specialist audience who want to try for university courses or seeking professional registration.

IELTS Academic Reading in detail:

Task type 1 – Multiple choice

Task type and formatCandidate needs to select the best answer out of 4 options(A, B, C, D) or Two answer out of 5 options(A, B, C, D, E). or Three answers out of 6 options(A, B, C, D, E, F, G). These questions may want you to complete the sentence or choose the best options.
Task focusCandidate reading skills are tested including understanding of specific points or overall understanding of the main points of the text.

Task type 2 – Identifying information

Task type and formatCandidate needs to answer whether they agree with the information in the text or not? Then test-takers needs to write True or False or not given in the boxes given in the answer sheet. Answer True or false based on the information in the passage not from their own knowledge.

Task type 3 – Identifying writer’s views/claims

Task type and formatCandidate needs to answer whether they agree with the views/claims of the writer in the form of Yes, No, Not given in the boxes. Answer Yes, No, not given based on the information in the passage not from their own knowledge.

Task type 4 – Matching information

Task type and formatCandidate is required to locate given information within lettered paragraphs/sections of a text and to write letters of correct paragraphs in the boxes. They need to find the reason, description, summary, explanation.
Task focusThis tests the candidate’s ability to find specific information.

Task type 5 – Matching headings

Task type and formatCandidates are given a list of headings with roman numerals like i, ii, iii etc. Test taker needs to match the heading to the correct paragraphs or sections. Answer the right roman numerical in the boxes on their answer sheet. No. of headings will be more than no. of paragraphs. This task is used with texts that contain paragraphs or sections.

Task type 6 – Matching features

Task type     and formatCandidate needs to match a set of statements to a list of options. Not all the options will be used. Instructions will be be given in the booklet.

Task type 7 – Matching sentence endings

Task type and formatCandidate needs to find the best way to complete the sentence ending from a list of options given in the question.

Task type 9 – Summary, note, table, flow-chart completion

Task type and formatCandidates are given a summary & they need to complete it with information from the given text. Summary will be of only one part of the passage rather than the whole. Given question can in the form of table, summary, series of boxes. There are 2 variations in this type. Candidate may be asked either to select words from the text or to select from a list of words How many words to be selected will be mentioned in the passage like No More than three words, two words, a number, one word only etc.

Task type 10 – Diagram label completion

Task type and formatCandidates are required to complete labels on a given diagram. Instructions will be given in the question for no. of words to be used like NO more than three words, no more than two words etc. Diagram ca be of parts of building, machine or any pictorial figure.

Task type 11 – Short-answer questions

Task type and formatCandidate needs to answer questions related to factual information about details in the given text. You are required to answer in words given on the answer sheet. How many words/numbers to be selected will be mentioned in the passage like No More than three words, two words, a number, one word only etc Numbers can be written using figures or words. Hyphenated words count as single words.
